Q100 – Examining Quantum Foundations 100 Years On is a 3 day conference marking the 100th anniversary of Heisenberg’s breakthrough paper “On the quantum-theoretical reinterpretation of kinematical and mechanical relationships” which laid the foundations of the “matrix mechanics” version of quantum theory. 2025 has been declared the “International Year of Quantum Science and Technology”.
To celebrate, we have invited leading researchers from around the world to discuss the problems that remain to be solved in the foundations of quantum mechanics in both theory and experiment, as well as the application of those concepts in quantum technology.

Getting Here
John Wayne (SNA) is the nearest airport, about a 20min drive from Chapman. It is a local airport with mostly national flights, but it can be worth going there even if it requires a stop because the nearest large international airport is Los Angeles (LAX), which is probably one of the worst designed airports in the entire USA. SNA is better, but if you do not have a choice then LAX will be fine.
Other nearby airports include Long Beach (LGB), LA/Ontario (ONT) and Bob Hope (BUR).
The best way of getting to the hotels or Chapman from the airport is to use a ridesharing app like Uber or Lyft. Shared shuttles and airport limos can also be booked from the airport, but they are either negligibly cheaper and much less convenient, or much more expensive. At LAX, rideshares can only be met at an area called LAXit, which is apparently pronounced “LA Exit”. This requires taking a free bus from the terminals. The same applies for taxis, but airport limos have the advantage that they can meet you right at the terminal.
The next comment is important: Do not try to get from LAX to Chapman by public transit. You will be able to do so if you visit us in 2026, when the rail link from LAX to the Metrolink opens.
If you are travelling from the local area, or getting to LA by train, then the Anaheim Metrolink station is not far from the hotels and the Orange Metrolink station is walking distance from Chapman. This may be worth doing if you have easy access to a Metrolink station, but Southern California is still very much car-based.
Accommodation
Invited speakers and those who are visiting under the Chapman-Perimeter MOU already have a room reservation at the Ayres Hotel, Orange. It is about a 10min drive from the conference location and we will be running a shuttle bus to the conference. There will be a hotel shuttle to transport participants to campus the mornings of March 12th, 13th, & 14th. Because of our large group size, there will be two shuttles transporting guests, one leaving at 8:15AM and the other at 8:40AM. If you plan to drive your own car and park on campus, please use know and we can provide you with a parking pass.
Important: Ayres Hotel has asked you to please sign up for the shuttle at check-in. They will have a sign-up list to track who will be using it and at what times. Due to the large number of guests, the shuttle is only able to take 15 people at a time. One shuttle will be leaving at 8:15AM and the second shuttle will leave at 8:40AM.
Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are also convenient for getting to and from the hotel.
Other participants should book their own accommodation. If you stay at the Ayres Hotel or the ALO Hotel next door then you may be able to use the shuttle, space permitting. If you would prefer to stay within walking distance to the conference then the hotel options are not that great, so you might want to try Airbnb. Other decent hotels that are within convenient Ubering distance of the conference venue include the Embassy Suites and Hotel Fera.
For those who want to stay in the same hotel for the APS Global Summit the following week, hotels in serving the Disneyland/convention center area in Anaheim, including the APS conference hotels, are within about 15-20min driving distance from Chapman.
University Amenities
Here is a campus map. The conference is in the Killefer building which is marked as “Under Construction” at the intersection of 3D and 4E on the map. It is not actually under construction, but it is newly rennovated.
WiFi
Chapman has eduroam, so use that if your institution supports it. Failing that there is also an open WiFi network on campus called “Chapman Open”. As the name suggests, it does not require a password.
Parking
If you are brining a car, you will need a parking permit to park on campus. There is a parking lot at the Killefer building, which you can access from the N Lemon St. side. I am hoping it will be available for conference participants, but if not, the Anderson Parking Structure underneath the football field is your best bet. Here is a parking map. You are required to park in the campus lots rather than on the street. Please contact us using this form to request a parking permit.
Food and Drink
We will supply breakfasts, lunches and coffee breaks during the conference. We will leave the coffee stuff out, but it will only be refilled at the official coffee breaks. If you find yourself needing a coffee or snack at any other times then the nearest place to the conference venue is the Subway on the corner of Glassel and Walnut. A little bit further, you can get better coffee at Philz. Alternatively, you can venture onto the main campus for a Starbucks in Beckman Hall or Einstein Bagel Bros. in Agyros Forum. There is also a coffee shop and vending in the library.
For more details of where to go in downtown Orange, see the directory of Restaurants, and this list of bars and pubs. I recommend downtown for the best restaurants, but if you want something within walking distance to the Ayres hotel, there are several restaurants at the Outlets at Orange, which is an outdoor mall, and the Golden Road Brewery is a good place to go for a beer. Please feel free to ask the organizers and locals for other suggestions of where to go.
Excursion to Laguna Beach – Saturday March 15th
There will be an optional excursion to Laguna beach on Saturday March 15. Please bring appropriate beach wear. The temperature in March is usually low to mid 20’s C (low to mid 70’s F) and it can be hot in the middle of the day, so bring a hat and water bottle. The water tends to be cold and there are a lot of waves, but some people still like to go paddling or swimming. There is also a swimming pool at the Ayres hotel, so you should bring swim gear with you anyway.
As well as the beach, we will walk around the town and have lunch there, so bring a decent pair of walking shoes.
To the local members, those that are available to assist with carpool will be greatly appreciated!
